Kadal is an upcoming Tamil film being directed and produced by Mani Ratnam. The film features debutant Gautham, son of actor Karthik, in the lead role. Arvind Swamy, who had appeared in several of Mani Ratnam’s movies in the 1990s, is also making a comeback through the film. Moreover Thambi Ramiah, who shot to fame after his award-winning performance in Mynaa, was also confirmed to be a part of the cast. Child artiste Saran, earlier seen in films such as Mudhal Idam and Mye, would be seen playing Gautham Karthik’s childhood role. January 2012, it was revealed that Samantha was picked to portray the lead female role and would become her most high-profile project til date. After production began, Samantha opted out of the film in June 2012 due to her unavailability to commit dates.
The shooting of the film started on 1st March 2012 at Manapad, the sea village of Thoothukudi district, with scenes featuring Arvind Swamy and Lakshmi Manchu being canned. In March 2012, for five day schedule, important scenes were shot at Kottayam, Muhamma, backwaters and forts of Kochi in Kerala.The filming will continue in Kerala throughout April 2012. A scene featuring the lead actors was shot at realistic appearing church, created as a set in Tuticorin.
